What you’ll need
3D Printer
You’ll get plenty out of this course from the baking lessons alone, but having your own 3D printer will allow you to get the most out of the experience and put what you learn into practice.
Most standard FDM 3D printers that use PLA filament will work well for this course. You’ll need a print bed of at least 6 inches (15 cm).
Our recommendation: The Bambu Lab A1 or A1 Mini.
Printing Materials
We’ll be using PLA filament for our projects. Where printed tools will come into contact with food, a filament specifically marketed as food-grade is recommended. There are many of these available on Amazon.
Keep in mind that the filament alone doesn’t determine whether a finished print is food-safe; the printing process and the design of the tool also matter.
Design & Printing Software
We’ll use Tinkercad and CookieCad to create and tinker with our STL files. These programs are free to use.
To print your designs, you’ll also need your printer’s compatible slicing software, which is typically installed or recommended during printer setup.
I’ll be demonstrating the process on a Mac, but you can follow along using a computer that’s compatible with your chosen software.
Baking Equipment & Ingredients
The ingredients and materials you’ll need will vary from project to project. A list will be provided for each unit so you can prepare in advance.
For most projects, you’ll need access to both an oven and a refrigerator.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any experience with 3D printing or design?
Not at all! If you’re curious about 3D printing and what it can do, this is a great place to start. Whether you’re new to it or already own a printer that you haven’t fully explored, this course will help you understand its potential and get more out of it.
We’ll start with the basics and learn to create our own designs using Tinkercad, a beginner-friendly 3D design program, and CookieCad to help create custom designs and STL files. You don’t need to be a designer or a tech expert — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment. We’ll learn by designing, printing, baking and experimenting along the way.
You’ll discover the potential of your printer and learn how to design tools that make tasks easier and are customized to your needs, interests and projects. We’ll apply everything to baking, but the skills you’ll develop go beyond the kitchen. You’ll explore the creative world of tinkering and computer-aided design (CAD), learning to turn ideas into practical, real-world solutions.
Can I use what I learn for my business?
Absolutely! This course opens up exciting possibilities for bakers, cake decorators and other creative businesses.
Learn to create custom tools and develop dessert designs tailored to your clients’ interests, themes and events. You’ll also discover new decorating possibilities and ways to achieve more precise, consistent results.
Whether you’re looking to offer something truly unique or solve a problem that standard baking tools can’t, 3D printing can help you take your creativity further.
Do I get the files for the projects?
Yes! All the STL files and recipes used in the course are included, so you can follow along with the projects and put what you’ve learned into practice.
A companion book is also planned and will be available to purchase separately.
How long do I have access to the course?
You’ll have lifetime access to the course, so you can revisit the lessons whenever you need them. If you join at the launch price, you’ll also get every module added in the future at no extra cost. The launch price is available until 31 January 2027.
Can I ask questions if I get stuck?
Yes! If you have questions as you work through the course, you can contact me by email for support.
Is the course suitable for home bakers, cake decorators and schools?
The course is designed for a range of creative learners, from home bakers and cake decorators to people who simply enjoy experimenting with technology.
It’s also a fantastic learning resource for educators and students exploring design and making. Students can connect computer-aided design with real-world applications, using baking projects to test their designs, see what works and identify what needs refining.
The course is sold for individual use. If you’re interested in using it as part of a school or group programme, please contact me to discuss your needs.
